Rodents

Teeth highly specialized for gnawing give rodents their name and defining characteristic.  Most rodents in B.C., however, are not pests. Eating seeds and plants, they exist in the wild and do not venture into human habitation.  Some rodents however, do live off humans by eating their food, sheltering in homes, and can spread disease.

However, wildlife can also cause problems in B.C. if they gain entry into homes. These include squirrels, birds, raccoons, skunks and others.

Prolific Breeding

One of the most pervasive problems with rodents are the fact that they can breed quickly and in great numbers.  Once a problem starts it can escalate quickly.

Populations continue to increase when the primary factors such as food and shelter are not removed.  Rodent proofing a home not only means sealing off critical entry points into a building, but also maintaining proper indoor and outdoor sanitation practices.

Rodents Can Cause Disease

Saliva, feces and urine of rodents can infect drinking water and food.  Inhaling contaminated dust can result in infection in humans. Bites are also a known way of disease.  In addition, rodents can carry fleas and ticks that can then affect humans. Rodents can be vectors of harmful diseases and conditions — they are not just a nuisance.  Find out more about proper food storage and rodents.
